Figuring out how much tax sits on top of a price — or how much of a price is actually tax — should take seconds, not a spreadsheet. This free GST calculator does both: add GST to a base price to see the final amount, or strip GST out of a total to find the price before tax. It works with the standard Indian GST rates, so whether you are checking a bill, quoting a customer, or reconciling an invoice, you get a clear answer fast.

How to Use This GST Calculator

Type the amount into the first box, then pick what you want to do with it. Choose “Add GST” when you have a price before tax and need the final price a customer pays; choose “Remove GST” when you have a total that already includes tax and need to work backwards to the pre-tax price. Select the GST rate — 18% is pre-selected because it is the most common slab — and press Calculate. The result shows the base amount, the GST amount, and the total, each rounded to two decimal places. Press Clear to start over.

What Is GST?

GST stands for Goods and Services Tax. It is the tax system used in India, where a single tax replaced a patchwork of older indirect taxes such as excise duty, service tax, and value-added tax. Instead of tax being added at several stages by different authorities, GST is charged once on the supply of goods and services, and businesses along the chain can claim credit for the tax they have already paid on their purchases. For a buyer, the practical effect is simple: the price on the shelf or the quote on an invoice usually includes GST, and the tax portion is a fixed percentage of the pre-tax price.

Because the rate depends on what is being sold, the same dollar amount can carry very different tax — a basic grocery item might sit in the 0% or 5% slab, while a luxury item can attract 28%. If you often work with percentages in other contexts too, our percentage calculator handles the general cases.

The GST Formula

Adding GST is a single multiplication. Take the base price, multiply it by the rate divided by 100, and that gives the tax. Add the tax to the base price to get the total. In short, multiply the price before tax by the GST rate divided by 100 — 18% GST on $1,000 is $180, making the total $1,180:

GST amount = base price × rate ÷ 100
Total = base price + GST amount

Removing GST is the reverse, and it trips people up because you cannot simply subtract 18% from the total — the tax was calculated on the smaller base price, not on the total. The correct way is to divide the total by one plus the rate as a decimal. To remove GST, divide the total by one plus the rate as a decimal — for a $1,180 total at 18% GST, divide by 1.18 to get $1,000, so the GST portion is $180. GST is always charged on the base price before tax, never on the total itself — that is why removing it requires division rather than simply subtracting the percentage:

Base price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
GST amount = total − base price

Worked Example

Say a laptop is listed at $1,000 before tax and the GST rate is 18%. The GST amount is $1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = $180, so the customer pays $1,000 + $180 = $1,180. Now flip it around: a bill shows $1,180 including 18% GST. Dividing $1,180 by 1.18 gives a base price of $1,000, and $1,180 − $1,000 = $180 of tax. Both directions land on the same numbers, which is a handy way to check your own work — if the add and remove calculations disagree, one of them has an error.

A $200 meal at 5% GST carries $10 of tax, for a total of $210; at 28% the same meal carries $56, for a total of $256. Always confirm which slab applies before quoting a price.

Common GST Rates

India’s GST system uses five main slabs. The table below shows what each rate adds to a $100 base price, so you can see the effect at a glance.

GST rate Tax on $100 Total on $100 Typical items
0% $0.00 $100.00 Fresh food, books, basic essentials
5% $5.00 $105.00 Packaged food, economy transport, restaurants
12% $12.00 $112.00 Processed food, household goods
18% $18.00 $118.00 Electronics, most services, restaurants
28% $28.00 $128.00 Luxury goods, cars, sin goods

Rates do change from time to time as the GST Council revises slabs, so treat the table as a guide and check the current rate for your specific item. You can read more about how the system is structured on Wikipedia’s overview of GST in India. The 18% slab is the most widely used rate, covering a large share of goods and services, including electronics and many services. That is why this calculator defaults to 18%, though you can switch to 0%, 5%, 12%, or 28% as needed.

Tips and Limitations

First, always confirm whether a quoted price already includes GST. In India, consumer prices usually do, while business-to-business quotes often exclude it — mixing the two up is the most common mistake. Second, the calculator rounds to two decimal places, so on very large amounts the result may differ from an official invoice by a cent or two. Third, this tool handles the standard percentage slabs only; it does not cover cess, compensation levies, or special composition schemes. Finally, if you are a business owner, use this calculator for quick checks and quotes, but rely on your accounting software or tax adviser for filings. For bigger money decisions, such as borrowing, our loan calculator can help you work out monthly payments.

Whether you are adding tax to a quote or pulling it out of a bill, getting the number right the first time saves awkward corrections later — run it through the calculator above and quote with confidence.
